Cambridge May Ball & Prom Dress Inspo

As we dip into June, Prom-Ball-Party season is upon us! Whether you’re looking for your high school leavers prom dress, summer soirée dress or university ball outfit, this blog post will spark some inspiration!  Whilst for proms and balls the dress code is usually long, (and is my length of choice by default for these dazzling events), some parties and proms permit shorter numbers. So, I have collated a few of my favourite glamorous gowns and sultry short dresses to dance the night away to.

Once you’ve selected your dress, it’s time to accessorise! Check out my prom bag post here and my prom shoes post here (featuring fashionable platform trainers for when your feet get tired but you still want to add some height!)

CAMBRIDGE MAY BALLS

Cambridge May Balls are the highlight of the social calendar. Full stop. If you’re lucky (or unlucky?) enough to be papped by the Daily Mail, you know you’ve had a night to remember. Despite being called “May Balls”, Cambridge’s glamorous balls are in fact held in June, a few days post exams, as a final farewell to a tough academic year. Prepare for lots of food, (make sure to queue early to grab your hands on Trinity’s illustrious oysters), drinks & headline acts!

May Ball season is back in Cambridge. After a 2 year hiatus due to the C*v*d Pandemic, Cambridge has recommenced its beautiful balls. For freshers who started their degrees amidst the chaos, this means they will be getting a ball in their final year. For 2020 fourth years like me, it means we can return and be reunited with friends one more time. Sadly, I will no longer be able to attend this year – even though I was looking forward to it for so so so long! … maybe next year!

PASTEL TULLE À LA GIAMBATITISTA VALLI

“Showstopping” is an understatement when it comes to Giambattista Valli’s dresses. Loved by fashion icons from Kendall Jenner to Leonie Hanne, this ~artwork~  will make you the star of the ball. Pastel tulle is a big theme this year- from pale yellows, light sky blues and lavendar-lilacs, the dresses will make you the true star of the ball by making a sophisticated, silent statement.

The sell out 2019 GV x HM collection a couple of years ago was the perfect time to secure these enigmatic dresses. I was so happy to have managed to add Kendall Jenner’s bright pink tulle dress and the light pink flower lace dress to my dress collection! Yes, there was countless website refreshing. Yes, I had to wake up early. And no, actually, I was actually early to my lectures! It was a win-win-win. Positive externalities of shopping, eh? I’d recommend keeping an eye out for future H&M designer collabs, ensuring 5* wifi & lots of refreshing so that you can add these gold dust designer pieces to your collection at more affordable prices.

Choose to combine tulle and sequins to r-e-a-l-l-y make a statement this prom season!

SEQUINS SEQUINS SEQUINS

Anyone who knows me knows I l-o-v-e sequins and will use any opportunity to whip out the glitz and glamour and add a sprinkle, (ok, ok, maybe a little more than a sprinkle), of sequins, glitter and shine to any outfit. At my last Trinity May Ball (2019), of course I had to combine sequins and pink for my ball dress!

Mark your entrance with a bang with a long sequin number. You truly will *s*h*i*n*e* bright like a diamond.

SILK

Nothing says chic more than a long silky dress. Choose black for a refined look. Its versatility will mean you can wear this for dinner dates and multiple events later in the year. Choose softer, pastel colours for summer, to create a flowy, Aphrodite-esuque look.

Secure your dream dress (I mean, it *has* been 2 years in the waiting, so it you have to dazzle) & dance the night away! Let me know your faves and any other dresses on your wishlist! Lots of love, Jo xoxo
